SCHOOL HISTORY

History is a written record of the present and the past handed down from one generation to the other. To produce a written account of any event and important dates and people, one need a lot of interest, patience and skills to reconcile names with the happenings around him. A rich informational background is required of a researcher for him to gather and collate as authentic a report as necessary.

As a result of the interviews conducted, per records available and based on documents presented the name of the school DATU GUIABAR MEMORIAL CENTRAL PILOT SCHOOL before and now DATU GUIBAR PILOT SCHOOL is a name given of the donor of the parcel of land reserved for school site.

Datu Ama Ni Dong Guibar was appointed as tenyente for Lebak in 1919. Lebak was then an area comprising Kalamansig now, Palimbang and Salaman. He was appointed by Gov. Gen. Leonard Wood, the governor for Mindanao and Sulu. Out of his concern for education and development of the people, he donated in 1920, twenty four (24) hectares of land the Common for school site. This school site was excluded from the portion of land reserved for town site purposes of the municipality of Lebak under Executive Order No. 19, s. 1921. The school began its operation in 1922 with Capt. Mekenzie as its first supervisor and Capt. Edwards as its first school head followed by Capt. Estombo up to 1928. The school was named Kalamansig Settlement Farm School operating up the primary level only, under the Commonwealth of the Philippines, Department of Public Instruction and Bureau of Education. Agricultural curriculum until Grade VII was the school offering since 1932 with Mr. Simeon Millan as the school head. In 1933 up to 1935, Mr. Gumbay Piang and Mr. Miniato Cuevas were the school heads respectively. In 1936, Mr. Jose Gestosani was head. During those years, the school continued to operate as an agricultural school. Datu Ama ni Dong Guiabar, in his sincere desire to help both Muslims and Christians in the community, donated six carabaos to encourage pupils especially the Muslims to learn as only few of them know how to plow during those days. Likewise, he financed the construction of more school buildings and dormitory for boys. Fruit trees like coconuts, mabolo, jackfruits and other fruit trees were planted.

In 1937-1938, Kalamansig Settlement Farm school pupils graduated in grade seven under the agriculture curriculum with Mr. Recco Oliver as Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Simeon Millan as supervisor and Mr. Norberto Caoili as Principal. In 1938, the Kalamansig Settlement Farm School was renamed Kalamansig Elementary School operating up to grade seven under the agricultural curriculum and accommodating pupils up to as far a Kiamba because this is the only existing school in the coastal area.

In 1939 -1940, Mr. Pedro Ventura took over as principal of the school. In 1941, Mr. Pedro Pinares was the superintendent, Mr. Miniato Cuevas was the District Supervisor and Mr. Perfecto Pabillon was the principal with an enrolment of more or less 300.

When the Second World War broke out in December 1941, classes were suspended up to 1948. In 1948 to 1950, school personnel were all acting office in-charge and no records was available as to the name of higher officials. Pupils graduated under the Elementary Curriculum (Grade VI) of the Republic of the Philippines, Department of Education, and Bureau of Public Schools. Kalamansig was then under the Municipality of Lebak with Mr. Macario Billedo as the first appointed mayor. The supervisor was Mr. Amador Alojado and the principal was Mr. Vicente Pizarras.

In 1951, Mr. Reynaldo Vega took over as superintendent of schools, Mr. Elpidio Javier as District Supervisor and Mr. Vicente Pizarras as the principal. In 1952, Mr. Benigno Millan took over as the District Supervisor and Mr. Mamerto Bernales as the acting principal. In 1953-1954, Mr. Reynaldo Vega was still the superintendent of school, Mr. Felipe Dumantay, the District Supervisor and Mr. Mamerto Bernales as the principal. No records of actual enrolment could be found in the school file, likewise the names of personnel who run the school since 1954-1963.

Upon creation of the municipality of Kalamansig in 1963, the school site donation of twenty-four hectares (24) became ten hectares as proclaimed by the President Diosdado Macapagal and the remaining fourteen (14) hectares was retained as part of the town site subdivision. The school continued its operation with the following data available and gathered, to wit:

In so far as the name of the school is concerned, the present name was so adopted with legal support from the local government. The donor, Datu Ama ni Dong Guiabar has set a good example and had a great influence on both the Christians and Muslims. He had exemplified outmost generosity and concern for the welfare of the people, so that, in recognition and in lasting memory of the donor, the Sangguniang Bayan of Kalamansig, in its regular session on August 3, 1981, adopted a resolution approved by the Municipal Mayor Meinardo E. Concha in motion of Vice Mayor Carlos D. Buenaflor and duly seconded by SB Bienvinido A. Tan, to rename Kalamansig Central Pilot School to Datu Guiabar Memorial Central Pilot School. In 2003, Datu Guiabar Memorial Central Pilot School by virtue of a PTCA resolution duly approved by the Sangguniang Bayan of the Municiaplity of kalamansig.
